Joining as an Officer
Leadership is both a science and an art for those who are able and willing to drive success at the forefront of their team. To be given a command or leadership role in any organization is a privilege which no one shall take for granted.
As an Officer in the Hong Kong Army Cadets, you will have tremendous opportunities to nurture and exercise your leadership and management skills under and alongside former Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) of British and Commonwealth military forces. As your cadets and NCOs' moral and operational leader, you will lead them in training, exercises, public duty events as well as international competitions and exchange missions with overseas army cadets. Above all, you will accomplish challenges you never thought you could handle, and you will apply the organizational and managerial skills which you've mastered here to further grow your personal career.

Joining Procedure
Upon indicating your interest towards becoming an Officer, you will be invited to attend an information session. Apart from learning more about our organization in this session, you will be given the opportunity to raise questions about an Officer's required attributes, responsibilities, as well as time commitment.
Should you decide to proceed with your application afterwards, we will invite you to return for a selection examination and Board Interview. This is where we will find out more about your strength, previous leadership experience, interest and motivation, and we will subsequently decide whether you would fit in as an Officer.
If you manage to pass your Commissioning Board Interview, you will be appointed an Officer Cadet. Then, you will be put through a series of training for 39 training sessions.
If you possess the right disposition and motivation but lack the necessary leadership experience or qualities to become an Officer right away, the Board may recommend you to enroll as a Non-Commissioned Officer under observation for a certain period, before you would be allowed to go through the Commissioning Board Interview again. As a Non-Commissioned Potential Officer, you will be given a privileged mentorship to nurture your leadership skill throughout your observation period, and priority in your future Commissioning Board Interview, without guarantee of passing.
Upon your successful completion of initial Officer training, you will be promoted to Second Lieutenant. Hereafter, you will be required to support or understudy with an Officer senior to you, usually a Lieutenant or Captain, to refine your technical knowledge and command ability for at least another year. Should your performance prove satisfactory, your Commission will then be confirmed and you will be promoted to Lieutenant. You will then be given your own command of a Platoon or other command tasks in various projects.
