Frequently Asked Questions
How are you different from the so many wargame groups in HK?
There is nothing wrong with the wargamers but the HK Army Cadets are fundamentally very different, in that wargamers usually do what they do for the activity’s own enjoyment without other higher motives. Whereas our military training curriculum is enjoyable as well, we do it for the ultimate goal of building our members’ character and leadership. Also, our instructors are actual former military personnel and they are able to teach authentic military knowledge.
What sort of time commitment is required to be a member of the HK Army Cadets?
We generally train twice a month on Sunday. Over the summer or long public holidays, we may organize training camps in southern China or the New Territories. Beyond training, Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers would naturally be expected to spend more time in planning or doing development or administrative work. Like everything else in life, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
Can I transfer my previous rank or qualifications from another uniformed group or a foreign military to the HK Army Cadets?
This would be dealt with on a case by case basis. Fundamentally, our standards may be different from other uniformed groups in Hong Kong and in some cases the individual would be given an equivalent or lower acting rank until her or his performance is proven satisfactory. In some cases, the person may be asked to re-qualify for her or his former rank simply by attending a few courses or training sessions. Certain training may be waived for individuals with an actual military background.
Is it not sensitive to conduct military training in Hong Kong nowadays?
The Army Cadet organization is a popular international youth movement found in many developed and Commonwealth countries. In all of these nations, there is a clear distinction between the actual military, which is responsible for national defense, and the army cadets, which use only part of the military training curriculum to develop youths into leaders and responsible citizens. The Hong Kong Army Cadets is a government registered, law abiding and non-political organization. We are not here to overthrow any regime so there’s absolutely nothing sensitive about what we do.
